India → the Netherlands
🇳🇱 Exporting Agricultural Products from India to the Netherlands
India–Netherlands bilateral trade crossed US$27.8 billion in 2024-25, with the Netherlands ranking as India's largest EU export destination. Leading agri-food exports: grapes (₹1,457 Cr — India's largest grape market globally), castor oil (₹1,087 Cr), mango jam (₹133 Cr), gherkins in vinegar (₹105 Cr), turmeric (₹81 Cr), pomegranate (₹62 Cr), and mango pulp (₹53 Cr).
Active Trade Agreement
India–EU Free Trade Agreement (negotiations concluded January 2026)
Immediate duty elimination on 70.4% of tariff lines covering 90.7% of India's exports — including grapes, spices, cucumbers, dried onion and processed foods — with a further 20.3% of lines moving to zero duty over 3–5 years. The text was closed at negotiator level on 27 January 2026 and now goes through legal scrub, translation and ratification, so MFN rates still apply at the border until it enters into force.
Trade Relationship
Why the Netherlands Sources Agricultural Products from India
India's geographic proximity, competitive pricing, and established compliance infrastructure make it a preferred supplier for the Netherlands's agricultural import needs.
The Netherlands is India's largest merchandise export destination in Europe and third-largest in the world after the USA and UAE, with bilateral trade crossing US$27.8 billion in 2024-25 and India running a substantial trade surplus.
Grapes are the standout category at ₹1,457 Cr — the Netherlands is India's single largest grape export market worldwide — and castor oil at ₹1,087 Cr makes it India's second-largest castor destination, reflecting Rotterdam's role as Europe's premier hub for both fresh produce and industrial oleochemicals.
Rotterdam is Europe's largest port and the primary Border Control Post through which a large share of Indian agri-cargo enters the EU — product cleared here typically redistributes onward into Germany, Belgium, and the rest of the single market, multiplying its effective reach well beyond Dutch consumption.
The Netherlands' Bloemenveiling and fresh-produce trading infrastructure at Rotterdam and the Westland region gives Indian grape and fresh-produce exporters direct access to some of Europe's most sophisticated wholesale distribution, not just Dutch retail.
The India–EU FTA concluded in January 2026 will further improve India's position on dried onion, gherkins, mango products and spices into the Netherlands once ratified — building on a trading relationship that is already India's strongest in continental Europe.
Compliance Framework
Importing into the Netherlands — Regulatory Requirements
Import Authority
NVWA (EU Official Controls)
Food imports into the Netherlands are governed by EU law under Regulation (EU) 2017/625. The NVWA (Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority) enforces MRL, contaminant and labelling compliance, and Rotterdam operates as one of the EU's principal Border Control Posts, clearing consignments against a CHED-PP pre-notified in TRACES NT before onward distribution across the EU single market.
Standard Import Documentation
