Origin & Traceability

Sourced from Multi-State Sourcing

Geographic Origin

Uttar Pradesh (Agra, Farrukhabad), West Bengal (Hooghly), Punjab, and Gujarat (Banaskantha/Deesa) are India's principal export-potato growing states. Kufri Jyoti and Kufri Pukhraj are the most common export varieties. Cold storage at 0–4°C converts a 2-month harvest window into year-round supply. Nepal (₹276 Cr) is the dominant buyer; Oman and Indonesia are secondary. Ventilated dry container — no cold chain required for fresh export potato.

Harvest Cycle & Availability

When It's Harvested

Potato is a Rabi crop — sown October–November, harvested January–March. Cold storage at 0–4°C is standard across India's potato belt (UP and WB both have large cold-store infrastructure). Cold-stored quality holds for 4–5 months post-harvest; fresh-season stock (January–April) has the best skin quality and firmness. Nepal supply is typically from WB (shortest route); Gulf and SE Asia markets served from UP/Gujarat via Mundra or JNPT.

Frequently Asked Questions

Buyer Questions, Answered

What are the major Indian potato varieties for export and which size grade is standard?

Main export varieties: Kufri Jyoti (most widely grown, good shelf life), Kufri Pukhraj, and Kufri Badshah. Export size grade: 100–250g/piece (medium-large) — the standard for Gulf, Southeast Asian, and Nepali markets. Over-sized (250g+) or under-sized tubers are graded out. Specify your target weight range and we'll confirm what's available from current cold-stored stock.

Why is sprouting and solanine a food-safety concern in stored potatoes?

Potatoes in cold storage (0–4°C) gradually sprout as they age past their dormancy period, typically 4–5 months post-harvest. Sprouting and exposure to light triggers solanine production — a naturally occurring glycoalkaloid that is toxic above 200mg/kg fresh weight. Green-tinted or sprouted potatoes are rejected at grading and packing. We record cold-storage exit date per lot and provide this to buyers — ask for the exit date when comparing year-round supply sources.

What phytosanitary requirements apply to potato exports — particularly for the EU and Indonesia?

EU potato imports require certification of freedom from brown rot (Ralstonia solanacearum) and ring rot (Clavibacter michiganensis) — both regulated Solanaceae pests in the EU phytosanitary framework. These certifications require field inspection and lab testing at the growing site. Indonesia requires a phytosanitary import permit plus standard COO and phyto certificate. Nepal (₹276 Cr, our top market) requires standard phyto + COO — simpler documentation.

What is your MOQ and what payment terms do you accept for first-time buyers?

Standard MOQ: 1×20ft FCL (~20 MT). New crop (Jan–Mar harvest) is best for freshness and pricing; cold-stored supply available May–December. Payment: 60% advance + 40% against BL copy. Terms improve — 50/50 on second, 40/60 on third. LC at sight for repeat buyers.

Quality Assurance

Our Commitment

Every potato shipment is graded by weight, inspected for green/sprouted tubers (solanine — a food-safety concern), and cured before packing. Cold-storage exit date recorded to manage sprouting risk.
